The CYP7A1 gene, encoding cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxlase is specifically expressed in mature liver hepatocytes. In order to determine if hepatocytes could be differentiated in mouse embryoid bodies differentiating from mouse embryonic stem cells (ES cells), Asahina et al. (Genes to Cells) identified CYP7A1 as a gene specifically expressed in liver but not in yolk sac. In contrast to hepatocyte-related genes such as Afp, Alb, Hnf4 and Ttr, which are expressed in both the liver an d yolk sac visceral endoderm, CYP7A1 is therefore a highly specific marker for hepatocytes.
